An idiom is a combination of words that has a figurative meaning, due to its common usage. An idiom's figurative meaning is separate from the literal meaning or definition of the words of which it is made. This principle states that the meaning of a whole should be constructed from the meanings of the parts that make up the whole. Frequently used are substitution ciphers where each letter is replaced by a different letter or number.
