Great book for students and residents alike

The updated 3rd edition is an absolute must have for med students rotating through the ICU, medicine residents, and any off-service rotator spending any time in the units. This book takes a lot of the anxiety out of working in the ICU. We all worry about vent settings, the body's response to the stress of the ICU setting, and mostly CODES! Recall takes you through each organ system's response to the extreme physiological stressors encountered in the unit and demystifies them all through series of "board like" questions. The section on ICU populations breaks down the common complaints/problems you may run into when dealing with trauma, burn, transplant, and other patient groups. With an updated section on anesthesia and sedation/ventilation techniques, rest assured, you will be comfortable not only managing these patients but you'll be in good shape to respond to fellow and attending's questioning. Shifts in the unit can be long and often very busy with little down time. With the recall book all you need is a minute or two to run through several questions and keep current on "need to know" topics. The CODE section walks you through common scenarios you will encounter while in the ICU. From prearrest situations, to the code itself, to "when to stop/when not to start" this section forces you think about difficult situations BEFORE you find yourself living them in real time! The updated BOOKMARK is a great resource to keep in your pocket. It prompts you, by system, on important things (ex: GI - bowel fcn, gas, NG output, liver fcn, etc) to consider when preparing your assesment/plan on very sick patients. As an Emergency Medicine who has spent time in the ICU/CCU, I would highly recommend this book to anyone about to spend time in an ICU, regardless of education level or experience.
