In 1 Timothy 4:1-2, the Bible explicitly warns us: "Now the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. They will speak lies hypocritically, and their consciences will be seared." Esotericism refers to any secret knowledge held by a small group of people, generally derived from or instilled through the study of Gnosticism, yoga, alchemy, magic, spiritualism, hypnosis, astrology, meditation, mysticism, and occultism. It is esoteric because it asserts that the "divine" is discovered within human identity. Therefore, it adopts a mystical perspective intended for, or capable of being understood by, a small number of people with specific knowledge or interest. Charismatic witchcraft consists of teaching and practicing this esoteric knowledge within traditional Christianity in order to blur the line between light and darkness; this is why the apostle Paul warned that its followers are hypocrites whose consciences are dead. Scripture further underscores the confirmation made by Jesus himself, at his first coming that the entire world is under the sway of the devil, prince of the current world system. His ultimate goal is to merge idolatry, sexual immorality, esotericism, and a superficial Christianity into a mega-religion. Thus, instead of being the conscience of the world, the salt of the earth, and the light of the world, this New Age Christianity will become an integral part of the current world system, contributing to the denial of the one true God and to placing the "self" at the center of earthly existence, under this Universalist and inclusive doctrine. In this second volume of ICHABOD, we will examine the subtle, and sometimes less subtle, penetration of spiritualism and the folkloric religious philosophies of ancient Africa and the Orient into Christianity. The reason the Apostle Paul warned against seductive spirits and demonic doctrines is that spirits, although invincible, are immortal. Thus, as long as human beings live on earth, these spirits will seek to express themselves through humans via these doctrines and religious rituals. Their goal, in seeking to express themselves through humankind is to serve their master, the devil, whom Isaiah prophetically denounced in chapter 14, verses 13-14: "You said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the north; I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.'" The devil's ambition is for humanity to worship him, in place of God, as the Almighty God. All the angels who joined his rebellion to become demons (Revelation 12:9) are actively working to corrupt as many human souls as possible, in order to lead them into their promised damnation (Matthew 25:41), which Jesus confirms: "Then he will also say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.'" That being said, please understand that this book is not a biased critique of any religious denomination, nor is it an attempt to defame anyone, living or dead. Its purpose is to critically examine people, doctrines, denominations, and religions in the light of God's Word, since the Bible is our primary standard for measuring truth.
