This is an odd little book, I bought it initially because I just assumed that it was a collection of ice cream recipes and that would be quite good. However it is not really that at all - there are a few in here, but in actual fact it is more of a discussion of the development of icecream as a food. What it took to do so, and where it went from there. There are recipes in here from the 18th century including that ulimate of cook books by Hannah Glass - it also has early Italian and European recipes. The book is divided into 8 chapters but in reality the history items are mixed up throughout. Chapter 7 has all the modern recipes and chapter 8 is strangely icecream in literature and culture......like I said it is a bit strange I will keep this book with my other cookbooks because it is so odd, not quite a cookbook, not quite a history. The illustrations are mostly in a kind of sepia tone, a few colour illustrations. It is nicely laid out but more for people who take pleasure in reading about cooking than cooking - or most especially for those who enjoy trying centuries old recipes as they were originally made.
