ICE Broke My Silence is a deeply emotional story about generational wounds, resilience, heartbreak, and learning how to rebuild a life after years of pain.
Mikie, the main character, grows up surrounded by men who do not value women the way they should. Without realizing it, she finds herself repeating the same painful patterns she witnessed as a little girl. After years of emotional struggles, heartbreak, and trying to hold her family together, she finally finds the strength to walk away and begin again.
But starting over is not easy.
As the years pass, Mikie struggles with loneliness, rejection, and the devastating pain of estrangement from some of her children and not being able to see some of her grandchildren. While scrolling through TikTok one night, she suddenly realizes she is not alone. Thousands of parents and grandparents are silently suffering the same heartbreak, loving deeply while being shut out from the people they miss most.
The book explores how emotional wounds, manipulation, silence, and unhealthy family patterns can carry from one generation to the next. It is also a story about faith, healing, self worth, and learning that sometimes the hardest thing to do is let go and place the pain in God's hands.
As Mikie grows older, events surrounding ICE begin bringing painful memories from her childhood back to the surface. Growing up Mexican American in Los Angeles and Pasadena, she begins reflecting on the treatment many Mexican families endured for generations, the fear, the silence, the humiliation, and the feeling of never fully belonging in the very place they helped build.
At the same time, Mikie realizes life is not black and white. She does not agree with everything happening politically, but she also learns that it is okay to speak honestly about pain, history, and personal experience. She comes to understand that people can agree to disagree while still showing humanity and compassion toward one another.
ICE Broke My Silence is a raw and honest journey of a woman who keeps getting knocked down but refuses to stay there. It is a story for anyone who has ever loved deeply, lost pieces of themselves trying to save others, struggled with family division, or searched for peace, identity, healing, and purpose later in life.
