One thirst leads to another

The book title, "I Thirst" is partly inspired by Mother Teresa's mission statement "To revive the thirst of Christ by serving the poor" When Mother Teresa died the mission never missed a beat,it's momentum based on the basic values instilled by her. Outside the chapel in her house was a blackboard on which was written: "If you want peace, reach out to the poor." By following this credo, de Jong says he has found a new purpose to life and a serenity "that an isurance policy just couldn't buy."

Fascinated

The experience Michael had that are described in his book kept me fascinated to the very end. I am always in awe of someone who can work around such overty and illness.

Courageous, joyous and fulfilling.

Honest and compelling!

I was touched by Michael de Jong's incredibly honest story of his search for healing and revelation. With surprise, I realized that his personal accounts of life within the Indian community reflected the polarities that also exist within all of society - we live within the confines of a physical life, a human "doing", while we search for our spiritual sense of self and try to be a human "being". He shows India as a nation of immense spirituality, at times in conflict with the crass commercialism that also exists. He uses humour and style in his storytelling, and an honesty that is rare. A really good read!

An attitude of gratitude

Many examples of privations and hazards of trying to survive in a third world country are described throughout "I thirst"-situations alternately humourous, dangerous, or enlightening. Included also are scenes where the street of Calcutta come alive with real places and people, as seen through the eyes of a tourist who eventually came to regard the city as a second home.-Personal success Magazine.
