When I turned thirty, I did the opposite of celebrate. I sat in an unfurnished room, by myself, and thought about my most recent bout of heartache. However, my melodramatic, self-pity party was cut short when I heard a voice inside my head whisper, "But how many hearts did you break along the way?" The thought wasn't planned, but rather just slipped from my unconscious mind to the forefront like an unwelcome guest. Either way, a thought cannot be unthought-of, so my self-wallowing was put on hold as I took the time to reflect on past relationships that brought me great pain, whether platonic or romantic in nature. As I recalled each relationship, friendship, infatuation, and weird fling, I began to see the black and white world around me slowly dissolve and turn into shades of gray. Shades of gray where I had as much fault, if not more fault, than the same people I had claimed jilted me in the first place. It was a very humbling experience indeed. This collection of essays and short stories made me feel a bunch of different ways. Some made me laugh, some made me cry, and a few made me dream of alternate realities that never came to fruition. However, the biggest takeaway from all of this is that the human heart is fragile, so whether it is our own or another's, we must treat it with the utmost respect. Because while some hearts heal quickly, some hearts take a long time to mend, and even then, they might be a beat or two off. That is not something you should ever take lightly, as the burden for one may be the lifeboat for another, and you never know when you might find yourself drowning in a sea of love.
