Both Vinny Hunter and Kim Nicol had resigned from being head of the Scottish Borders Police Force.

An encounter with a serial killer who had used the Borders as his own personal killing field had taken its toll on Vinny in particular.

He had started his own private detective agency along with a young girl he had met through his work in the force.

His partner Kim was finding it hard to get a job working with horses until a message was left on their answering machine which led to a new beginning for her. However Vinny's job was difficult and after every case the body count would unfortunately mount up. He wasn't sure if this was the best idea he'd ever had.
