Did you hear about the woman who traveled over 10,000 miles last summer to give new American flags to complete strangers? That's me, Annie Amerika. I drove 10,889 miles in 65 days to give away 70 large American flags. Why donate $1,800 worth of American flags to unsuspecting homeowners? I did it because those homeowners are the patriotic backbone to our great country. Those Americans, who fly an American flag every day and fly it proudly, even when Old Glory is tired, are the real heroes in my story.I gave away the flags to honor my husband, John E. Wilkison IV, a disabled Vietnam veteran and the most patriotic person I ever met. John wanted to give away new flags to patriotic Americans who flew worn flags. John died on November 7, 2010 and was never able to give away those flags, but I was able to honor him and our country by spreading patriotism, one flag at a time.That two-month journey brought smiles to the faces of dozens of Americans, and it brought healing and peace to my own heart.
