This story comes from the city of Durango, Mexico in the late 1800s., a city famous for its scorpion population. It is a reminder for people of the injustices that can occur from the wealthy being able to have influence over law enforcement, a theme all too familiar in Mexico and beyond. Juan was thrown in jail under false pretenses with no sign of getting a fair trial or any trial at all because a wealthy man wanted him out of his way. Given the most dangerous ultimatum, this story emulates the belief that true love can overcome any peril or corruption. The "Cell of Death" is still there in Durango welcoming visitors to hear the tale of Juan and his story of perseverance in the name of love.
