Many children who grow up in households that are dysfunctional tend to have an identity of them being misunderstood. They feel like no one understands them and that people judge them unfairly. Children are just trying to be loved, accepted, and like for who they truly are. In the short story Mary represents a child that everyone misunderstands all the time and they take her for granted. Mary does find it difficult to move past the judgments of others. She later accepts that she is different, unique , and special in her own right. And remembers that she does not have to grow up to live her life for no one but God.
