American public education is at a critical crossroads. We have overemphasized testing while placing an insufficient emphasis on learning and teaching. While assessment plays a vital role in determining whether students are learning what has been taught, assessment cannot and should not replace instruction and higher order thinking skills. We cannot continue to view our students as test scores. Too many political leaders, intent on using education as a buzz and re-election issue, have made our schools a numbers game to boost their careers. The author's personal experiences as an urban school administrator and teacher are a guide to the pitfalls of over-assessment and political school governance. It's time to reexamine our priorities and recognize once again the value and importance of our students earning a quality education.
