Celebrate the 50th birthday of I Can Read with a classic collection that contains four I Can Read classics: Amelia Bedelia , Biscuit , Frog and Toad Together , and Danny and the Dinosaur .
As a parent of a 5 yr. old, I ordered this set because it was advertised for the 4+ yr. olds children and because of the good reputation of the 'I Can Read' brand. What I got is a 4-book box set, sampling the first 3 of the 5-level reading classification the series is using. Biscuit - illustrates 'My First' or 'Shared Reading' level. Simple and easy to read words discuss the needs and habits of a little puppy. Danny the Dinosaur - is 'level 1' or 'Beginning Reading' level. 64 pages of dinosaur adventure not only encourage children to read but also expand their vocabulary and show the dynamic interactions between the children, the dinosaur and the rest of the world. Amelia Bedelia - samples 'level 2' or 'Reading with Help'. More words and more complex sentences describe incompetent but very energetic Amalia's adventures in house-keeping. Frog and Toad Together - also at 'level 2', tells 5 stories shows the dynamic duo as they follow a 'to do' list, discuss gardening, bake cookies, read a tale about dragons and giants and dream. All books feature large typeface text and almost every page has a beautiful color illustration. Each book is 64 pages with the exception of the first one (Biscuit) which is only 28 pages long. It's a good progression and it's a good way for a parent to learn more about the 'I Can Read' series but a child would normally read books at one specific level at any given time. I wish the the publishers produced level-specific sets rather than multi-level samplers. My little girl will be able to use exactly one book from this set at this time but, hopefully, she will advance quickly so that she may be able to read the more advanced ones soon. Until then, I will have to find more books at the 'Shared Reading' level. I am, in fact, ordering Biscuit Storybook Collection (Biscuit) which should be what we need to advance to the next level, quickly.
