Hypertext Review

Christine Maul Rice

A Chicago-based arts and culture nonprofit, Hypertext Magazine & Studio is a recipient of grants from National Endowment for the Arts, Illinois Humanities, Illinois Arts Council, and City of Chicago's CityArts Department of Cultural Affairs. Since 2016, seven essays published by Hypertext have been recognized in Best American Essays, edited by Hilton Als. Numerous short stories and poems published in Hypertext have gone on to win awards. One highlight includes Verity McKay's "Filth" which was a 2023 PEN/Robert J. Dau Prize winner and was republished in Catapult's Best Debut Short Stories 2023.

We've accomplished all of this as a wholly independent publisher. In other words, we do not receive funding from a university or larger organization. Not many indie presses have been publishing for fourteen years and, although funding for the arts can be difficult to come by, we remain committed to our mission.

Since becoming a nonprofit in 2017, we have published 12 print journals and paid hundreds of contributors, visual artists, and graphic designers. We've been publishing online since 2010 and our archives include thousands of short stories, essays, interviews, and poems.

Publishing online and in print is a staggering amount of work. Our editors read through slush piles, work with writers on edits, manage production, copyedit-all in addition to their full-time jobs. Our editors, all gifted writers in their own right, are incredibly dedicated, talented, and generous with their limited time.

Our stunning cover art, titled Eavesdropping, was created by Samantha DeCarlo. You can find out more about Samantha or purchase her work by visiting artistreplete.com or wgdecarlo.com.

So many individuals have financially supported HMS and for that we will be forever grateful. The majority of our funding comes from individual donations, from readers like you who recognize the power of independent publishing.
