HYENA is a novel set in two disparate deserts; the Kalahari, one of the last great empty quarters in Africa and the cold, rock bound wastes of the Canadian Arctic. A native African prospector walks out of the Kalahari with a 50 carat blue diamond and a frantic race erupts among several interested parties to find its source. A young Canadian geologist, the woman who found the first diamond mine in The Barrens of Canada, is summoned from her work in the north to travel to Africa to join in the search for the rich pipe her employers believe must exist in the empty north of Botswana. Meanwhile, the shadowy organization only known as The Company, worldwide protector of the big diamond companies' interests, also begins its hunt; it is charged with finding the source and eliminating any knowledge of its existence. Billions of dollars are at stake and The Company's orders are simple: use any means necessary to ensure that the source is lost forever. Diamonds are merely decorations for the human body but are coveted for the power, the money and the luxury that they can bring. To find them, to own them, men will kill without thought or compunction while others will endure the extremes of cold or heat, thirst or hunger, to unlock their secrets. Interwoven into the story is the role of the predators of Africa, particularly the little understood animal called the Spotted Hyena, the true super predator of Africa's wilderness. All of these forces of business, science, government and nature collide in a fast paced novel that will keep the reader riveted to each page. HYENA reads like a detective story in which the clues laid down on the surface of the earth billions of years ago must be interpreted in a race both against time and against men of extreme violence, using modern scientific tools and techniques to find them, interpret them and follow them to their source.
