Aldous Huxley's Hollywood Adventure

This book is for people who like to read about famous writers, i.e., Faulkner, Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, who go to Hollywood to try to work as screenwriters for nothing except the money, don't do very well, but end up going nearly crazy trying. Aldous Huxley was even less successful as a screenwriter than any of the previously mentioned writers. He never really ever produced a workable screenplay. Dorothy Parker and her husband Alan Campbell, were probably the most successful of this group of writers attempting screenwriting. They made money, but didn't seem to write anything memorable. If you're a gossip monger like me, one interesting tidbit of gossip I thought was that Mrs. Huxley was good friends with Audrey Hepburn, the actress, who was a neighbor of the Huxleys for a while. For me one of the most interesting parts was when Huxley and his wife buy a little country house out in a little rural community far from L.A. and they try to take up farming. I thought this an excellent, entertaining book because I find the subject matter fascinating: how great novelists cope with the film community where they don't really fit in, but want and need the money, and end up making themselves and everyone around them miserable. Unfortunately, I can identify with that. If you like reading biographies of writers, this is a must for people who like Aldous Huxley. He was an interesting person and because of that this is an interesting book. That Smooth-Faced Gentleman
