Details that didn't make the papers

This novel is based on true events, and captures the agonizing recovery and frustrating bureaucracy following one of American's major disasters. Swinford makdes it sound like hurricanes really are forever in this chronicle of Hurricane Andrew. In a very personal story, that alternately burns with anger and leaps with laughter, Swinford shares the kind of details that didn't make the papers. Now that hurricane season is here again, it makes riveting reading.

This story takes you inside both hurricane and mankind

Having recently moved to Florida, the only knowledge of hurricanes I had was through brief television and newspaper reports. Swinford's book changed that. The author has given me a "right there" look at the destruction, heartache, frustration and resiliency of the human soul involved in such a disaster. He takes the reader inside the eye of the hurricane and the hearts of the people. I came away with a chilling appreciation of Andrew's power, Homestead's loss, man's character and God's grace, all done in a very readable and enlightening style

I'm not much of a reader, but came across this book by Swinford and couldn't stop reading it. It makes you laugh, makes you cry, makes you think - about how important family is and how your life can change in an instant - forever.

Swinford's "Hurricanes Are Forever" brings to light the enduring suffering of victims of natural disasters. It also shows the strength and endurance of the family as a unit. Parts of this book moved me to tears where others made me laugh out loud. Keep tissues handy! I feel as though I know the characters personally. Everyone who has ever experienced a natural disaster, or lives in a "risk" area should read this novel.
