This is the first book I have ever read on the New England Storm of 1938, so I can't compare it with the many that have been published in recent years. But I will say it was quite a pleasant read. McCarthy takes us from the storm's origin off the coast of West Africa and builds to the great day in late September. Most of the pages concentrate on the stories of families caught out by the coast, forced to fight for their lives. The last chapter discusses the country's response the great disaster. Worth getting if you can find a copy!

Hurricane by Joe McCarthy is absolutely fabulous. McCarthy does a wonderful job of finding accounts of the 1938 disaster. The northeasteners has no idea it was coming! What amazes me most about this book was the fear I felt for thes non fictional characters. If you Live anywhere from Long Island to Portland Maine you will enjoy this captivating work.
