Hunter's Choice

"A powerful and intelligent thriller " - Steve Hamilton, author, Alex McKnight novels. With the sound of snapping pine tops and tortured metal, a deer hunt becomes a rescue mission. Matt Hunter's choices quickly become life-and-death decisions as a barrage of life-changing events thrust him into a fast-paced, page-turning adventure as he fights killer storms, dangerous gangsters, DEA bureaucracy, and love for a seductive woman and pits all his skills and judgment against those who would just as soon see him dead. Tanya crashes into his life on a drug-filled plane, adding a beautiful, mysterious ingredient to a cauldron of action, danger, death, riches, and romance. A Russian crime boss strides onto the scene, alternatively deadly or charming, depending on how his borsch is stirred. The action races across an ice-covered Michigan lake, disrupts Hunter's snow-bound Upper Peninsula cabin, slices through the Gulf Stream on a yacht, and stalks tropical hills.

A Thriller With Some Food For Thought Thrown In

In his debut novel, Hunter's Choice: A Matt Hunter Adventure, J.C. Hager has employed his expertise as a hunter to offer us quite a yarn that could probably easily make a great movie. Our narrative unfolds when a Cessna 310 crashes in the Upper Peninsula in Michigan. On board the aircraft are two passengers and the pilot. However, there were also some other interesting goodies that our protagonist Matt Hunter soon discovers and as we will see, places him into a moral quandary. Forty-eight year old Hunter recently retired after twenty-three years as a high school teacher and football coach. This was his first opportunity in over twenty years to hunt during the second week of gun season. He inherited, for the most part, from his grandfather, three hundred and sixty acres of very remote property in Upper Peninsula in Mackinaw County. The land also included a quarry that was last active in the 1930s, a rustic cabin and moreover part of the largest cave system in Michigan. It was while vacationing in this remote area when Hunter hears the crashing sound of the Cessna. Subsequently, Hunter makes a decision to rescue whomever may have been on board the aircraft-a choice that would result in an astounding effect on his life. It was so far reaching that it would have been practically impossible to have ever imagined the costs that would emanate from this decision. In fact, little did Hunter realize that he would be meeting up with an important Russian Mafia crime boss, falling in love with Tanya, a beautiful young woman who, along with her parents, were innocently implicated in criminal activities, the encountering of various US governmental agencies that were all getting into the act, coming into possession of narcotics that probably had a street value in the millions, discovering bundles of cash, being pursued by some nasty big-league bad guys, and, oh yes, involved in a few killings that were all committed for the sake of his own self-defence. All of which, as you can see, makes for some very thrilling reading that keeps humming along in a lively novel that also includes the passion of a tale of romance. What also shines in the novel is Hager's familiarity with the finer points of all things pertaining to hunting and boating that he cleverly interweaves into his plot. Moreover, he has fashioned a memorable flawed hero, who is forced to straddle two worlds. Perhaps, we may even be inclined to conclude that the ending is morally wrong and I guess this is what makes the novel all the more out of the ordinary and great food for thought. Fun and fast paced. At times I felt it was a bit over descriptive yet it was a book that I could not put down. The ending kept me wanting more. Can't wait for the next one

A master storyteller whose attention to detail insures the reader's rapt attention from beginning to

A good read is defined as a novel you simply can't put down from first page to last. "Hunter's Choice" by J. C. Hager is just such an action/adventure rollercoaster of a suspense thriller account of Matt Hunter, a man who survives killer storms, ruthless gangsters, and a DEA bureaucracy. Then there is Tanya Vega -- a lovely and seductive woman who slams into Matt's life along with a smuggler's plane full of drugs whose owner is a volatile, unpredictable, but always lethal Russian crime boss. This riveting novel is set in one of Michigan's Upper Peninsula ice-covered lakes where Matt's snow-bound cabin is to be found, continues on a 54-foot Hatteras yacht sailing the Gulf Stream, and continues along the Amber Coast hills of the Dominican Republic. Superbly crafted, "Hunter's Choice" documents Hager as a master storyteller whose attention to detail insures the reader's rapt attention from beginning to end.

Hunter's Choice - An Outstanding First Effort

For a first effort book, Hunter's Choice by JC Hager kept me spellbound from the time I picked it up until I read the last two pages of acknowledgements. JC Hager has obviously done his homework and weaves detail into a logical thriller from start to finish. His hero is understated with a laugh out loud dry sense of humor. His heroine is sultry and keeps you wanting more. His story is logical and believable but keeps you on edge because you never quite know nor can you anticipate the next turn. I liked it and couldn't put it down. That's saying allot because I'm an avid reader of all the great adventure authors. Hager has quite a career in front of him and I can't wait to see what Matt Hunter gets into next.

Character to be reckoned with

Matt Hunter is a new character to be reckoned with... A vastly resourceful wilderness native and uncommon mix of clever adversary, tough combatant, tender romantic. Adventure in the northwoods of Upper Michigan to the Florida Keys and beyond. The locales were well-described from the author's experiences. This is not just an "action-adventure" novel for the guys. It is good work by J.C. Hager. Jo Rust
