totally engrossing

I couldn't put this book down. Mr Wilson's evocation the of the era and the place is totally mesmerizing!!I hope there is more to come.

Beating the Odds

I've just read this new book (re-read it, actually), and I'm very moved by it. It tells the story of a young black jazz musician who runs into a hero from his childhood, a famous black baseball player from the old Negro Leagues, who has fallen on hard times, and how these two men are caught up in the racial violence and terror of the early days of the Civil Rights Movement in the South. But the story brings many of the characters of that small Southern community to vivid life and the reader is really drawn into the community and can appreciate the conflicts of interest, strong traditions, ambivalence and frustrations felt by these characters during a time of social upheaval. The writing is beautiful, even poetic -- but Wilson has a good ear and the dialog has the freshness, grit and humor of real speech. This is a story of hope, determination and resourcefulness in overcoming huge challenges. I couldn't put it down. Hunger's Season
