Food for the Hungry Soul

Hunger for the Holy: 71 Ways to Get Closer to God. I offer this recommendation as an Episcopal Priest of a small parish that does not particularly lean towards personal spiritual devotions. I was surprised when a committee chose this book, over others, to be the one for our 5-week Lenten study. It was received very well. The format lends itself well to such a group experience and discussion. For some, the "depth" was a bit more than they could plumb but they were still eager to gather weekly to dip in their toes for the next chapter's worth of focusing on a "Christ centered life." The names of the chapters would be helpful in understanding the tone of the book. It is not too sappy, intellectual, or preachy. There are not expectations that one will "achieve" a certain "level" of enlightenment. The book provides "tools" for fine tuning one's walk with Christ. The book has 8 chapters. We had to choose 5 for our course. Those were: 1. Hunger for the Holy: Finding Wholeness in Troubled Times; 2. Cultivating the Center: How to Organize Your Life Around Christ; 4. Pray Change into Your Life: Ask Christ to Make You Like Him; 6. Follow the Manufacturer's Manual: A Blueprint for Growing a Great Soul; 8. Exercises to Make Your Heart Like His: Healthy Hearts Produce Christ-Focused Lives. This book is indeed nourishment for the hungry soul. -Dianne Andrews
