Humanitarian Law: Selected Documents

In ancient times, there were rules which imposed restrictions on the conduct of war, the means of warfare, and their application. Such rules have continued throughout history to present day. This book discusses international humanitarian law: the law of armed conflict - or law of war - and the effects they have. The introduction distinguishes humanitarian law from human rights law. Moreover, the introduction describes the history of humanitarian law. The book contains the most important treaties and instruments of international humanitarian law, from the 19th century to the present. The 1949 Geneva Conventions (with annexes), the Protocols additional to the Geneva Conventions (1977 and 2005), and the Hague Conventions from 1907 are included. Even though these treaties are the main treaties with regard to international humanitarian law, there are many more instruments protecting the vulnerable against the effects of armed conflict. A selection of those documents is also appended.
