"Human Rights of Women under Criminal Law: An Analytical Study of Provisions and Practice" is a very debatable topic. Violence against women continues unabated in our country, both inside and outside the home despite the legal safeguards provided for women. Women are often terrorized so that they do not assert their rights. After more than fifty years of independence, the Nation has not been able to protect women from crimes. The crime rate in general and women in particular has increased substantially. What humanity needs is a world that is free, fair and equal; a world that will have no discrimination, violence or exploitation, a world where opportunity and prosperity are shared by all.

In the 21st century, domestic violence would increase more due to changed life style, i.e. increasing use of alcohol, luxuries of life beyond capacity, lust for more money etc. This is going to be a world phenomenon. Domestic violence is a slow poison which is swallowing the ingredients of family life.

The linkages between gender, human rights and development have become indisputable. As violence against women continues to plague every society, there are incalculable costs to the economic, social, political and human fabric of communities worldwide. Neglecting to recognize these interconnections also disregards the harmful consequences that gender based violence have on the women of the world: low self esteem and poor emotional and physical health leading in many cases to suicide and murder. Transcending boundaries of nationality, culture, religion, socio-economic status and affecting the capacity of over half the world's population to freely and fully participate in the development process, violence against women takes an immeasurable toll that has yet to be fully and accurately accounted for.

In the years since 1995 and the Beijing conference, women's groups all over the world have worked systematically on the issue of violence against women in the home, in the community and in the society, with the aim of bringing about legal and administrative reforms that will both prevent violence against women and protect women who are the victims of violence. As a result of their efforts in October 2006, the new legislation- "The Protection of Women from Domestic violence Act, 2005" was implemented for protecting women from domestic violence.
