Eudora Welty was an accomplished storyteller. She is one of the most important women writers of the American South. Welty's writings are excellent and her stories are surprisingly different from each other. Her command over a wide variety of tones, styles, and narrative techniques and inventive techniques and inventiveness is outstanding. Southern speech is primarily narrative. This holds true in Welty's writing, in which one will not find mere conversation, but the telling of a story. Often with Welty, the story is not told through the narrator, but rather by the characters.
