Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is one of the major health issues of our time and is responsible for several types of cancers and other skin diseases. So far, 200 distinct HPVs have been identified, and each is associated with a spectrum of diseases, from warts to malignancies of the cervix, anus, vulva, penis, and various head and neck cancers. Surprisingly, recent research reports confirm that people have low knowledge of HPV. Among those who have heard of HPV, less than half of them knew that it can cause various cancers and skin diseases. Although, there have been scientific advances, facilitating prevention strategies for certain types of cancer, which indeed have reduced the incidence of the disease, currently, there is no specific treatment available for HPV-associated diseases. Therefore, it is vitally imperative to delve into the knowledge about HPV for the discovery and/or development of suitable targeted treatments. Though, there are plenty of textbooks that convey detailed information on the molecular biology of cancer and HPV; the aim of this book is to provide a basic knowledge of HPV and its associated diseases in a simple way to be understood by a common reader.
