A Lot of Information for a Little Book

As a homeschooling mom, I've been looking for good books about human anatomy and so I took a chance and ordered this little Dover book. Its only 93 pages but densely packed with information about the body systems, lots of vocabulary, and many black and white drawings (at least every other page). It covers: cell structure, hair and nails, sensory organs, skeleton and muscle systems, digestive system, liver and spleen, respiratory system, circulatory system, central nervous system, gland system, and reproductive system. I think it's best suited for 4rd-8th grades, although you could use it with younger kids with much explanation. The black and white diagrams of, for example, the eye, ear, heart, etc. are particularly good. I think just having a student draw and label these diagrams would be a great exercise. The text is challenging, but full of interesting facts. Many simple experiments are scattered throughout the book. It was originally published in 1964 so some might consider the drawings and style dated (including non-PC terms like "Oriental" and "Negro" when explaining genetics). But others will appreciate the no-nonsense approach to the human body. You won't find any talk about body image or sexual preference in the reproduction chapter, just the facts. Overall, I like it and I think it will be of use to us.
