Great novel!!!

I am very fortunate that living in Kazakhstan I still had a chance to read Elsie Sze's novel "Hui Gui". The book proves once again that irrespective of differences in language, religion and culture we share the same feelings: love, compassion, sorrow and hope. I believe that Elsie's book is a memorable event as it raises and cleanses the sole which happens not so often nowadays.I am also sure that there will be a director who will make great movie based on Elsie Sze's novel because the book has everything: a gallery of portraits, dynamism of events and true stories which can make cry and laugh anyone who loves Life and believes in the triumph of good over evil.

Captivating Characters

I was captivated by Hui Gui from the moment I picked up the book and started to read it. The characters are fascinating and make you want to hear their story. Set in a dynamic part of the 20th Century in China and Hong Kong, this book takes history to a personal level. It makes you feel as if you are living it with the characters. I highly recommend it.

An Amazing Chinese Story

With sensitivity and compassion, Elsie wrote vividly the lives and struggles of the men and women who lived at the time of upheavals in China, firstly the Japanese invasion, then the communist takeover, to be followed by the great purge. Elsie also moved her readers by the skills with which she depicted the joys and sorrows of those who 'slipped through the fence' to go to Hong Kong to begin a new life under colonial rule.

A touching story

This novel is a beautiful manifold of modern Chinese history. Hong Kong has always been a cultural melting pot between the east and the west. This is a great book to appreciate the traditional Chinese values through Tak Sing's life long hard working which should especially be reminded in the current period of booming Chinese economy. I strongly recommend reading this story.

A beguiling story

This is a fascinating novel, beautifully written with grace and style. One is mesmerized as one follows the fortunes of Tak Sing---from the turmoil of his childhood in revolutionary China, through his struggle for survival as a refugee in Hong Kong, to the later intrigue of his final years. This engrossing tale of courage and integrity is filled with poignant and tender scenes of human relationships, underlining the author's steadfast belief in the power and magic of love. I highly recommend it.
