During the 1980s many changes took place in American society that did not stand out at the time and are taken for granted today. Yes, there was disco and the birth of the personal computer, but in the early eighties people could smoke cigarettes almost everywhere, touch-tone phones were just starting to be used, black and white televisions sets were still being sold, the Vietnam War was fresh in most people's minds, and the greatest country in the world could remember from personal experience what it was like to have to wait in line to receive rationed gasoline. In addition, the economy was in "stagflation," which was characterized by an unemployment rate of 8 percent and home mortgage rates near 14 percent. It is in this environment that Hugh Slifer, the main character of this book, received his undergraduate degree and had to find a job to survive. This is the story of Hugh's first job.
