"Book II - A Navy Ensign in Vietnam" follows the author as a Navy Supply Corps Officer preparing for and then serving in Vietnam first as a Pier Officer and then as Officer-in-Charge of the Navy ramp in battle scarred Hue during the turbulent years of the TET Offensive of 1967 and 1968. The author was assigned to Naval Support Activity Danang, the Navy's logistical arm for the Marines and other friendly forces in the northern provinces of The Republic of Vietnam. More than a memoir, this collection of contemporary writings portrays a part of the war that is seldom presented: logistics in the Brown Water Navy.Prior to serving in Vietnam, the author attended the University of Arkansas where he was a student activist and where he studied sociology and creative writing. This collection reflects that prior education and experience while also offering a compelling personal history of his journey in the Vietnam War.In the book, the author pays homage to the American poet, William Carlos Williams, and portrays the flow of his time in the war as analogous to going over the falls of the Passaic River in "Paterson." Here, however, the falls are steel coming from the sky.
