Howe High School Class of '46 and Other Irvington Stories

Many of us have a special place in our lives where we grew up and prepared for adulthood. In my case that place was Irvington, a unique community in Indianapolis. Irvington might be the only community in the U.S. that can boast that it housed a university in its midst before it built its own high school. To that extent, I have written a book about that community centered around three important years: 1875, 1902 and 1946. Shortly after Irvington had been established in 1870, Butler University would relocate to Irvington in 1875, transforming the community to a mecca for education and cultural significance. I describe how this was a gamechanger for the both the community and the school at that time. A second period I discuss tells the story of Butler University around the turn of the twentieth century, and more particular, in 1902, when Irvington would be annexed to the city of Indianapolis. The community had a love affair with its college, and vice versa, and the school had been existence there for just over 25 years at that point in time. The other major story of the book tells the tale of the Irvington high school, Thomas Carr Howe High School, centered around the year 1946, a year in which Irvington along with the rest of the country would begin its journey to preeminence in the world, on its way to being the most powerful and successful country in world history. In this book, I weave stories of several Irvington characters who played important roles in the progress of the community, but I also include several stories of the average person and how they were affected by this beautiful settlement of kind souls. The book closes with a group of stories of Irvington inhabitants who would entertain others and serve as local, and in some case, national celebrities. This talented group of individuals serve as a snippet of the talent that would emanate from those fortunate enough to call Irvington their home.
