Serious analysis of picking lottery numbers

Despite the title, this is a well written and serious book on the modern ``pick 6 numbers out of 49" type of lottery. Of course you can't affect your chance of winning but you can try to choose unpopular number combinations to maximize your share if you do win. Uses empirical data from around the world to describe ``foolish ways to play" (based on previous winning or non-winning numbers, patterns, etc) -- what makes these foolish is simply that too many other people use them. Concludes with a non-obvious recommendation: choose randomly subject to several constraints (one of which requires a bit of math to understand: a quantified measure of non-arithmetical-progression). An appendix has some upper-division college level math probability analysis, but non-math folks can just ignore it.

One of only two good lottery books

There are probably only two really useful and accurate books on how to play the lottery. The first is Ziemba, W. T. (1986) ,Dr.Z's 6/49 Lotto Guidebook, and the second is this nice little volume. The authors focus is on winning the greatest possible amount if your numbers are selected. The book is based on the important idea that, while there is no way to increase your chances of winning, there are plays which will increase or decrease the expected payoff, in the unlikely event that you do win. If you pick numbers the same way other people do, then you will have to share your winnings--something that could be very disappointing indeed. That is why, with the exception of this book and Dr. Z's book, the most popular lottery books will hurt you the most.

Nice book

Henze and Riedwyl's book on the lottery is very interesting in that it gives a honest mathematical and statistical view of the lottery. Unlike the vast majority of [other] books about lotteries, Henze and Riedwyl know mathematics, statistics, and probability theory. They make no claims that you will win (because you won't), but if you like recreational mathematics, it's an enjoyable book.

lotteryrev

If you want to stay away from lingering lottery myths and learn the truth and nothing but the truth on how to play lottery, this book is most valuable source of information. Based on the analysis of many millions of played combinations in many countries, it singles out the foolish styles of play that the typical lottery player follows. I found it especially interesting to see that playing foolishly means having to share the jackpot with thousands of other winners. Compared to most other books on the lottery, this book is completely honest. It is the definite lottery book for smart lotto players!

lottery winninings
