Great de-mystifier of modern art for any age!

This is a fantastic book for those who want an unpretentious, straight-forward, clear and concise overview of modern art. Hodge provides an exhaustive history, from the early beginnings of modern art (and the divergence of art from its classical forebears at the advent of photography) to present-day movements including performance art. It covers all the major movements: cubism, dada, surrealism, etc. I would say the book is probably appropriate for ages 12 or 13 up. I doubt that many children younger than that would be sufficiently interested to actually read through the book. That said, I think many adults skeptical of or overwhelmed by modern art would derive a great deal out of the book as well. It is definitely geared toward a younger audience as it offers a great amount of context for the movements, and the design is laid out in "flashy" magazine-like format with lots of sidebars and truncated paragraphs that read almost like soundbites. In this way, the reader gleans a lot of information but doesn't feel overwhelmed. It's a paperback with a heavy weight cover and thicker, full-color pages. Highly recommended as a gift for the budding artist, the creative person looking for inspiration, as a conversation piece for the coffee table (who could resist that title?!), or for anyone interested in a breezy but highly informative modern art history.
