Funny with a hart

Originally I picked this book up just by reading it's funny title. Coming with that my interest for Japan (mainly the Japanese chicks ;)). I was very pleasantly surprised by it's very attrachtive and funny writing style. Come to that the fact that this story had a place to go, not just experts of short and funny stories but to say a life story, with as I mentioned in the title a "hart". I recommend this book to all that want to be surprised by looking for a light hearted book and ending up with fun and emotion.

Pleasantly surprised

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has dated a Japanese woman because most likely you can relate to some part of this book. I wasn't sure what to think about the book from the title. I think the title is misleading because this is not a "how to" book. I wasn't really interested in a "how to" book especially on "picking up chicks", but I thought I would give this book a try. I am glad that I did. The stories are amusing and Josh Muggins does a great job of telling of his ventures of being a foreigner living in Japan and his excursions with the opposite sex.

Just a fun ride

Absolutely hilarious. Best book buy I've made in years. I was intrigued when I came across this title because I spent a year and a half in Japan myself teaching English just after college. It seemed like every "gaijin" I knew was writing a memoir of life in Japan, always with the "poignant doomed love affair" angle as the main theme. I even saw some of these things that made their way into print, and the results weren't pretty. So when I realized this was another American guy's memoir of his love life in Japan I was wary. Well, this guy nails it. He nails the American-guy-and-Japanese-girl thing. He nails the teaching-in-Japan thing. And he does it with a breezy, funny style that had me from the first page. Some parts are a little hard to get through, like his suicide attempt; but he manages to even make that come off funny somehow. It reminds me a lot of "A Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing." It's got that same funny-sad, "looking for love in all the wrong places" vibe going for it. But this one's told from a masculine point of view. Anyway, my friends who have never been to Japan liked it too, so the humor is pretty accessible. This is just a really fun ride.
