An enjoyable, 'Sex and the City'-esque romp

Twenty-seven-year-old Benjamina "Ben" Franklin may have been cursed with a ridiculous name, but that doesn't mean that she's not a success. After all, she's the authority on the L.A. dating scene for "Filly Magazine." The only problem? Her own love life has been stuck in neutral for years. And now, with her younger sister, Audrey's, wedding quickly coming up, Ben must either find a boyfriend, or spend her night sitting at the singles table. Since the latter is completely out of the question, she decides to put on her prowling shoes, and that's how she discovers Max. Max is successful, boyish, gorgeous, and possibly hiding a secret. Now, through a series of strange conversations with her best friend, and demented family; as well as various articles published in "Filly Magazine" but Ben herself, Ben must try and keep her head above water as she paddles through the treacherous waters known as dating, in an attempt to snag the guy, without committing any of the usual dating faux pas' that send guys running. I adore reading novels based on the "magazine writing world" setting, so I knew that I had to purchase Deanna Kizis' HOW TO MEET CUTE BOYS the moment I saw it. From page one I was hooked on Ben's "Sex and the City" meets "How to Lose A Guy In 10 Days" lifestyle, complete with fabulous clothes, ridiculous columns, cosmopolitans galore, and way too many cigarettes. Ben is a somewhat angsty character, whose down-trodden, almost cynical thoughts regarding the world of love are enjoyable to read about page after page; while her often upbeat, sometimes angry best friend's thoughts on the same subject, as well as her weight, are just as entertaining, and definitely mesh with how women in today's society think, and discuss, these various topics. An enjoyable, true-to-life, "Sex and the City"-esque romp through L.A.'s dating scene, and the life of a relationship columnist with no romance in her life. Must READ.

Giggling from start to finish, "Cute Boys" was a breeze and the perfect weekend read for chilling by the pool. Beautifully crafted and highly addictive, Ben's story had me smiling away and there's much more depth to the book than the "cute" cover suggests. The ending isn't picture perfect (as this genre of book tends to be), I found it to be refreshingly true to life. It's rewarding like the rest of the book, and this kind of realism elevates the material and ensures the book isn't just a fun read but a satisfying and thoughtful journey. Go read!

Hilarious!

I read this book very quickly because of the authors easy writing style and cute cartoons. Parts of this book were downright laugh at loud funny with references to pop culture and celebrity status. (Casey Kasem, Kato, musical references, 1980's culture). This isnt a heavy literary novel, its something that is light, humorous and a fun book in between heavier reads. I recommend this book if you want to laugh!

A First-Rate Read!

Ms. Kizis has written a wonderful account of young love gone horribly awry, filled with hilarious observations on the single life and animated by sharp wit and inventive language. Protagonist Benjamina is a study in obsessive attachment and its inevitable consequences, yet even in her darkest hours she manages to crank out the sharp, funny magazine articles that crop up throughout the story (illustrated brilliantly by Ed Brogna). Put together, it's both a terrific example of its genre and a keen-eyed commentary upon it. Recommended to anyone who is -- or ever has been -- single and smart.

insightful, hilarious and bitingly witty

Kizis manages to write a witty, insightful, yet light novel that transcends the girl genre. it creeps up on you, like a night of slow drinking. There are elements of Benjamina that resonate in us all, the insecurity and self-doubt we all fight, while putting on a pretty face externally. This book shows what it's really like to live in the big city, yet yearn to find real love even amidst the dirt of Hollywood.
