It's likely that you've heard the term "intimacy" used in reference to sex and/or romance.

For instance, the phrase "having an intimate relationship" is often used to refer to sexual behavior.

However, sexual activity is not synonymous with closeness.

Intimacy with a partner may be built via sexual activity, but this is by no means the sole sign of a close relationship.

It is possible to have sex without intimacy, just as it is possible to have intimacy without having sex. Both are viable options.

You're presumably implying that there was a somewhat intimate gathering of friends at the party, as opposed to a large number of total strangers who attended.

It's possible that you're also referring to the caliber of the time that the two of you spent together. It's possible that you and your buddies shared some personal information and became closer over things you have in common.

Your connections with members of your family, close friends, and other people in your life who you can trust all have characteristics of intimacy.

In the end, it has a variety of connotations depending on the individual.
A date may make you feel closer to them when you are watching a movie together, but your date may be counting down the minutes until you go for a stroll so they can feel closer to you.
