How They Worked Their Way

Once entitled "Stories of Duty," this collection of eight tales was written for young Catholic Americans, who wanted to read about children like themselves, regular Catholic children striving to live out God's will in their daily lives.

"How They Worked Their Way" tells the story of the Beresford family who, due to financial difficulties, has to leave their comfortable life in the city to live and work on a farm. The move requires sacrifices from all four of the children. Not only is the work laborious, but many of their new neighbors are hostile to them because of their Catholic faith. The ailing Mr. Beresford encourages his children to set their neighbors a good example by treating them with kindness, but not all of the children find that easy to do.

In "The Boys on the Block", there is strife between the American and Italian boys living in the "block," a section of housing for poor families in New York. In vain have both Fr. Raymond and the priest at the Italian Catholic church preached peace to their young charges. When Ned Smythe and Tom Keefe play a prank that results in one of the Italians losing his livelihood, the boys begin to see the wisdom of their priests' preaching.

The other short stories are relevant reminders of the value of hard work, prayer, kindness, and reverence and love for Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.
