Somewhat tedious

This is my first by this author and I was very disappointed. Choppy narrative, rather shallow characterization, and rather tedious writing style. Predictable story line, but that is expected in this genre so that is not necessarily a negative but it was hard to care what happened to these characters . I rarely fail to finish a book but this was a struggle.

enjoyable read!

a warm, fast read. the switch from the present to the past, then back to the present again works in this story. it also sets up the next book nicely. the only thing i didn't like was the abrupt feeling to the ending. hopefully, the author will make up for it a little bit by including the characters from this book in the next. looking forward to the next 2 books...hopefully, they won't disappoint.

Excellent

What a fun read! Ms. Boyle has done it again with a lighthearted tale that hits all the emotional buttons. There is mystery, humor, pathos and romance all included at the right moments. It was fun to revisit characters we've met in other books (though it wouldn't be necessary to have read previous books if you have not) and get a glimpse of the characters that we will meet in the next books in the series. Can't wait.

The Perfect Romance

This book is the perfect example of why I feel in love with reading historical romance novels. It is a true love story, filled with sexual tension, intriguing characters, and passion. I actually read this in one sitting - I couldn't tear myself away from Lucy and Clifton's story. Over the past few years, I have been disappointed with many of the books that have come my way... so many overused storylines, so many flat, sterotyped characters (heck, most publishers can't even come up with original TITLES for their books these days). I was losing faith that historical/Regency romance was even worth reading anymore. But books like this give me hope that there are still writers out there who can keep this genre alive. Thank you, Ms. Boyle, for writing this wonderful story.

enjoyable second chance at love Regency romance

The current Marquess of Standon cannot stand the harassing of the three widows. He warns them their choices are the street or sharing an abode in Mayfai. The two older ones acquiescingly thank their protector; the youngest Lucy Ellyson Sterling considers the street as scandal does not disturb her. Seven years ago, Lord Gilbert met Lucy when she and her father trained him on working undercover to gather information. They fell in love and he vowed to marry her once he came back from the war. Neither anticipated the length of the conflict that finally is over. He searches for her as she has vanished, but once they re-meet their passion remains strong. However, her dark secret and his even darker remorse tears them apart. This is an enjoyable second chance at love Regency romance that begins the moment the hero comes in from the cold. Filled with humor and pathos, fans will enjoy Gilbert's tale of meeting his countess as a spy student, but winning her hand proves much more difficult than her heart or learning advanced espionage techniques. Readers will appreciate Elizabeth Boyle's entertaining historical. Harriet Klausner

Delightful light read

A great mix of witty dialogue, good plot and interesting characters kept my up reading the whole book when I only intended to read 2 chapters!
