How Does a Hump Yard Work?: A Step-by-Step Journey Through Freight Train Classification, Shunting, Gravity, Retarders, Switches and Rail Freight Opera

By: Meikels, John

WHAT REALLY HAPPENS INSIDE A HUMP YARD?

A freight train arrives with dozens of wagons. A few hours later, those same wagons have been separated, sorted and assembled into completely new trains.

But how?

How Does a Hump Yard Work? takes you behind the scenes of one of the most fascinating processes in railway freight transportation.

Follow freight train 61847 through the fictional but realistically constructed Heidekamp Yard - from its arrival in the receiving yard, through wagon inspection, locomotive change and uncoupling, to the hump, where gravity sends individual wagons rolling toward their destinations.

Along the way, discover how:

- gravity moves freight wagons
- switches create individual routes
- retarders control wagon speed
- the hump control tower coordinates the operation
- classification tracks sort wagons by destination
- railway staff keep the entire process safe
- newly assembled trains are inspected and prepared for departure
- modern technology is transforming traditional yard operations

Written for readers with no previous railway knowledge, this book explains the technology, physics, terminology and human work behind hump-yard operations in a clear, visual and easy-to-follow way.

By the final chapter, the apparent chaos of a classification yard will look completely different.

Every wagon has a destination. Every movement has a purpose. And behind it all is a remarkably precise system.
