“All I need is a place where I can have total isolation and above all atmosphere.”

What lives in this house? What stalks these halls? What hides in these shadows? And who is playing that Piano? Suggested by the 1913 novel “Seven Keys to Baldpate.” By Earl Derr Biggers of Charlie Chan fame. Also, the dramatization by George M. Cohan. This time, we get some of the spookiest actors. Featuring: Vincent Price (Laura) Christopher Lee (The Stupids) Peter Cushing (Nineteen Eighty-Four) (1954) John Carradine (Stagecoach) Desi Arnaz Jr. (The Love Boat and Fantasy Island) Baldpate becomes Bllyddpaetwr in Wales. Kenneth Magee (Desi Arnaz Jr.) is a well-known writer. He meets with his publisher, Sam Allyson (Richard Todd). The publisher suggests he change his genre, as all his books are the same. So, Kenneth places a bet that he can write an old boilerplate novel in 24 hours. “All I need is a place where I can have total isolation and above all atmosphere.” There is a manor house in Wales, spelled weird but still pronounced as Baldpate (actually Rotherfield Park in Hampshire). The movie starts, and mysteries abound on a dark and stormy night. No electricity, but the manor is lit up like Christmas. Moving kind of slow; I guess they need to stretch it out to one hour and 40 minutes. Finally, it picks up the pace as all kinds of strange people and things start appearing. Keys start appearing, but no one has been caught physically using them. At least they creep around with candles instead of torches. Just as I decided they were not going to use the cat jumping off the refrigerator, he stepped on a “Black” cat in the middle of the stairs. Julie Peasgood makes Desi Arnaz Jr. look like a real actor. It has the standard ending twist. It is not spectacular, but you may want to watch it again to look for hidden clues. See it on (Special Edition) (Blu-ray) or on and off several streaming locations.
