House of the Dragon: What you need to know

More than three years after the end of the original series, HBO's massive success Game of Thrones gets its first of many planned spin-offs with the August 21 premiere of HOUSE OF THE Dragon. Here is everything you need to know if you're wondering how the series fits into the realm of the Seven Kingdoms (and just how many odd, hardly pronounceable names you're going to have to memorize).

A new game begins

Given that House of the Dragon is a prequel that takes place nearly 200 years before Game of Thrones, these events aren't particularly relevant to it. However, the conflict and tension surrounding the Targaryen rightful heirs and the sexist lines of succession that were central to Daenerys and Jon's dynamic-or would have been, if it had been given enough room to develop in the final season-is amplified in the new show.

That's correct, there will once again be a battle for the Iron Throne, with all the intrigue and treachery that goes along with it and, now, even more dragons. Before Robert's Rebellion, which toppled the Mad King, and even earlier than Daenerys' ascent and fall, the new series focuses on House Targaryen at their pinnacle of power in the Seven Kingdoms. Additionally, a large number of Targaryens rode and fought with dragons during the period when it is set, when dragons were an integral part of daily life.

House of the Dragon is a song of fire and fire if Game of Thrones was a song of ice and fire. Or perhaps Fire and Blood, since that is also the name of the novel that served as the basis for the new show. The 700+ page fictional history of the Targaryen dynasty from the time of Aegon the Conqueror, the first Targaryen to invade Westeros with dragons after fleeing the doomed city of Old Valyria in Essos, is a spin-off of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, on which Game of Thrones was based.

The Dance of the Dragons, a civil war in which Targaryen turned against Targaryen and dragon fought a dragon in a vicious and deadly struggle for dominance, proved to be the beginning of the end for the clan. House doesn't cover the entire novel, but rather a very particular period that is covered in it. The most intriguing aspect of the series based on Fire and Blood is that, although the major war events are described in the book, there is a lot of space for interpretation and artistic license.

Games Masters

The fact that House of the Dragon isn't being produced by Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss should give you some comfort if you were one of the many Game of Thrones fans who felt let down by the series conclusion. Instead, Ryan Condal, who previously created and produced the science fiction program Colony, and George R. R. Martin themselves are co-creators and executive producers.

Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, who is renowned for directing some of the greatest and most enduring Game of Thrones episodes, including "Hardhome," "Battle of the Bastards," and "The Winds of Winter," are also co-showrunners. The soundtrack for the House of the Dragon will also be composed by Ramin Djawadi, who is also responsible for the magnificent score for Game of Thrones.

You might expect to recognize familiar Westeros places, house colours, and symbols in the show's visual style, but since House is set almost two centuries earlier, many things appear very different. After all, the Targaryens (and the Seven Kingdoms as a whole) are thriving during this period of debauchery. More swords create the framework of the Iron Throne, making it look even more menacing and more as it does in Martin's books.
