My daughter is in kindergarten and she was given "Houghton Mifflin Literary Readers Book 2" to read for homework for her class assignments. Evidently, other children in her class have also received this book. I do not believe it is a kindergarten level book. The vocabulary can be quite difficult. For instance, in the story "Poinsettia and Her Family," the child is introduced to words such as "Poinsettia," "hydrangea," and "pachysandra" all on the first page. Three syllable words are not uncommon and the stories challenge the children to make inferences. Most of the stories are fiction with morals, which I find refreshing. There are some poems and one non-fiction work about whales. We learned a lot about whales in a very short read. My only wish for improvement in this book is more non-fiction stories. I am not a teacher, but having volunteered in my children's classes' reading groups, I believe this book suites most second graders, although my kindergartener and a few of her classmates are able to read and understand it. The stories are enjoyable and educational. I recommend it.
