Made me think of life differently.

This novel is a must read for any teenager. It gives you so much hope for Alma who is in the middle of an area where that is taken away so quickly and randomly. Thinking of this book still gives me chills of horror and sadness at what these kids had to go through. But reading it was exciting and interesting. I cant really describe what I feel twards this book in words other than saying that this book was very good.

One of my all-time favorites...

Hi, I'm a 15 yr. old young woman, and I'm currently reading this book for the third time. My mother purchased it for me a few years ago, and at first I was just like, "Oh like this will be interesting." I was only into Baby-Sitters' Club and that sort of thing. Then I finally did read it, surprized that I enjoyed it very much, (MUCH more interesting than the Baby-Sitters' Club any day!) At the time I didn't even understand all of it, but I felt Alma's pain and realized what a powerful story she tells. Plus, everytime I read it over, I understand more, and it makes me cry everytime. I also learned more about the hardships of war than I'd known. I can definitely relate with her on many levels throughout the story and one of the most amazing elements I found about this book is that it was written by a man! If you've read it you know what I mean, and if not- go read it today!

A great book that moves your heart!

I am 16 years old and loved this book. It shows you how diffult and trying life can be. I feel that the fact that the whole story is told through Alma's eyes and imagination makes it much more effective. You don't need to know all of the facts to realize how horrible the whole thing was. This book was very hard to put down, and gave you a sense of how powerful love can be.

Unforgettable!!!

An interesting and rare look at the war through the eyes of a young girl. Not since "Zlata's Diary" have I read such a visual and poignant story of the needless bloodshed and heartbreak of the Balkans. Recomend for all ages.
