This valuable contribution published by the People For the American Way provides an outline of the hostility that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people face every day in America. All fair-minded individuals should be offended that such activity persists. It is especially disturbing when you realize that each of the 292 documented incidents ripples outward to hundreds and even thousands of fellow citizens. Even positive responses to hate cannot completely erase the damage caused. For example, the homophobic column and subsequent rally at the University of Maryland described on page 151 tells of the students who protested the hate rhetoric published by the student newspaper, but does not fully indicate the impact on students who became too frightened to attend gatherings of their gay peers, and too embarrassed to use the escort service provided by campus security. Anyone who values human rights, dignity, and basic civility needs to read this book and ponder its implications.
