Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941) was known for his subjective and self-revealing books. Anderson was a copywriter and Ohio business owner but he had a nervous breakdown that led to his becoming a writer. His most enduring work is Winesburg, Ohio. Dark Laughter (1925), a novel inspired by New Orleans the 1920s, was a bestseller. Some of his language, while common a century ago, may seem jarring to today's readers but the writing offers insight into American history.
