Book Overview

Horses and Men: Tales, long and short, from our American life (1923) by American author Sherwood Anderson - This is collection of nine short stories published after the author's celebrated Winesburg, Ohio book. Horses and Men was originally designed to resemble Winesburg, Ohio, but it was of greater length. As with the previous collection, the author spins tales about life in small-town Ohio and the country folk who inhabit the land.... Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941) was known for his subjective and self-revealing books. Anderson was a copywriter and Ohio business owner but he had a nervous breakdown that led to his becoming a writer. His most enduring work is Winesburg, Ohio. Dark Laughter (1925), a novel inspired by New Orleans the 1920s, was a bestseller. Some of his language, while common a century ago, may seem jarring to today's readers but the writing offers insight into American history.
