A tall stranger is nearly killed riding through Horse Thief Pass. He's nursed back to health by a devout Quaker and a Harvard-educated doctor. Before he can seek justice for himself, he has to learn who he is because he suffers from amnesia due to the severe head trauma he received when he nearly died. The story is set in the New Mexico Territory and conveys some of the day-to-day hardships early pioneers faced living on the frontier. They were a hardy lot and his hardiness would be tested in his pursuit of justice.
