This book was inspired by a quantitative-qualitative study conducted at the Centre for Studies on Chemical Dependency at the Hospital das Cl nicas of the Federal University of Pernambuco (NEDEQ/UFPE). Using genogram construction and the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), it involved family members and chemical dependents and highlights the importance of hopelessness and family relationships in the recovery process. It questions the role to be played by the family and describes how hopeless the dependent may feel during treatment, thus expanding the possibilities for approaches and strategies by health professionals.
