When Hope learns of a fabulous spring that exudes wonderfully clear water from a ridge that lines her valley, she is appalled to realize that those she loves prefer drinking something other than water-an affliction that permeates the entire family, making them susceptible to inherent tragedies. But the spring becomes a special place to Hope and Ben, her life-long boy-buddy-who is also affected by that affliction. Both are determined to break out from under the spell of the local hills, and the affliction, which seem to reflect their problems. Sometimes the hills' bright cheerful appearance makes them smile, at other times it gives them such forlorn feelings that they have to turn away. But the spring, which brings tragedy into some lives, also furnishes a life-giving initiative to pursue happiness.
