Vetiver Westing has always been the sort of kid who listens to grown-ups, but she really, really misses her old house and friend in Former California. Her parents seem to think moving will be good for her. She just wants to go home.While Vetiver is on the journey to New New York, a stowaway phantom named Hop smashes into her life like a molotov cocktail. Hop can move through walls and possess people, but he needs someone ordinary to mask his presence from the mysterious entities chasing him. Hop asks for Vetiver's help, and she agrees to accompany him west. At first, things go according to plan; Hop helps her ditch her parents and they set out for Former California. After Hop advises her to join a violent rebel faction, however, Vetiver realizes he might not have her best interests in mind. As they travel through a riot-ravaged city, a desolate plain, and a portal into a war on the other side of reality, Vetiver begins to wonder if Hop is helping her at all . . . or leading her deeper into danger. If she follows him, she might never get home. If she doesn't, she risks losing her only ally.
