Amazing Civil War Fiction

Hmm...why is it that some of the best books I read aren't very popular or very well advertised? "Hoops of Steel" was amazing. It follows the story of Andie McQuire, a clever, fiery 18-year-old. The book itself took place only in the time of about a week, but it was long and satisfying--I couldn't put it down! Its historical accuracy was wonderful, and its backdrop against the bloody battle of Gettysburg was flawless. I would highly recommend this book to all Civil War buffs. It is a rough book, full of language and bloodshed, but its got one of the best portrayals of war I've ever seen in a fiction book. It is definitely at the top of my list of favorite books. On the back of the book, it says it is the first in a Civil War trilogy by the author. Is that true? Is there really going to be a sequel? It could stand alone just fine, but I'd love to read a sequel.

Wow! One of the BEST Civil War Books I've ever read!

While the description on the back of the book is rather vague, I figured I'd give this book a try...and I'm glad I did! This is one of the greatest books I've ever read (and I've read a lot!). Andie MacQuire is found orphaned and alone in his rather ramshackle farmhouse by the Sixth Pensylvania cavalry regiment. Confederates had murdered his father the night before, but the young boy is anything but broken by his grief. Intrigued by the youth's courage, intelligence, and apparent innocence, Colonol Sedgewick enlists Andie as scout for the Lancers. Once and again, Andie proves his skill, ingenuity, compassion, and intelligence, earning himself a place with the Sixth. But the Lancers are not simply on a jaunt through the Pensylvanian countryside. Rather, they are headed to join General Buford at the Battle of Gettysburg where Andie's secret will be revealed... I loved the plot twist at the end, it was perfect for me and my particular interests concerning the Civil War. Leonard's skill in historical research and descriptions, not to mention her ingenuity in developing plot, is worth reading over and over agian (as I can testify, having read this book more times than I can count!).
