Great book for kids who love baseball

Hooper Haller is the story of Elden Haller (nicknamed Hooper after his hometown in Utah) who is drafted by the Kansas City Royals and goes straight to the big leagues. The story follows Elden as he struggles with fitting in with the older players and with being on his own for the first time. Success has always come easy to Elden, so when he struggles with his pitching and he loses his focus - something that's never happened to him before - he begins to question whether playing baseball is right for him. Hooper Haller is interesting in that it's about a faithful Mormon who chooses not to go on a mission. The book doesn't deal with this decision, but this could be a good conversation starter for parents of young men struggling with the decision to go on a mission. I had read Hooper Haller in Junior High and I re-read it this Summer. While it didn't capture my imagination like it did when I was younger, it brought back a lot of memories. This is a great book for any young man who dreams of playing major league baseball.
